About Grateful Metals

A home for the collection, and the collectors.

Grateful Metals is a community-first platform for coin and bullion collectors — a private vault for what you own, a free public reference guide for what's out there, and a marketplace built on trust between real collectors. Everything else on this page is context for why it exists.

What This Is

Grateful Metals is three things sitting in one app:

  • A private vault for your collection — photos, values, notes, provenance, everything you'd otherwise track in a spreadsheet, kept secure and yours alone unless you choose to share.
  • A free reference guide covering ancient to modern coinage across nations and eras, built out one series at a time by the community and the administrator, with real photos submitted by collectors like you.
  • A marketplace between real collectors — buy, sell, and trade with people, not dealers, on a platform where scammers get banned when the community flags them.

This app exists because none of the tools I tried put those three things in one place. Everything else on this page is context.

The Story Behind It

Every platform has an origin. Here's mine, kept short.

Ian, founder

I graduated high school in 2001 and went into Computer Network Engineering, and by 2004 I was teaching the intro course at my community college. Around then, standing in front of a classroom, I first started reading about silver and gold — value you could hold, weigh, hand to someone. But it stayed research. The 2008 crash rerouted my career, and twenty years passed before I bought a single ounce.

In August 2023 I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Chemotherapy, then surgery in January 2024, then more chemotherapy — eight months out of work in total. You spend a lot of that time lying still, and the list of what actually matters gets very short, very fast.

While recovering, a memory surfaced of those late nights of coin research twenty years back. I went deep for the second half of those eight months — pure bullion first, then US coinage, then world coinage, then the whole sweep of it. Eight months of studying before my first purchase. I already knew that stack before I ever held it.

And on the practical side, nothing out there worked. I built spreadsheets. I downloaded app after app. Every tool was either half of what I needed or none of it. Somewhere in there the thought stopped being someone should build this and became I'm going to.

Why “Grateful”

The name comes from two places, and I mean both of them completely.

The first is simple: I'm grateful to be alive. Not in the greeting-card sense — in the sense of someone who was on an operating table under two surgeons and got to go home. Every coin added now is something to hold and someday hand down.

The second is the Grateful Dead. What inspires me isn't the music — while amazing in its own right — it's what grew around it. A community that spans generations. Parents who took their kids, whose kids now take their kids. Strangers who become family over a shared love. A “Shakedown Street” of the community, a platform for individual entrepreneurial ambition through buying, selling, and above all trading — outside of any government currency. That's exactly what coin collecting is at its best, and exactly what this platform is built to be a home for.

Grateful, for life. Metals, to hold, to own, and to pass down. That's the whole name, and the whole mission.

What This Platform Promises

  • The reference guide is free, forever. Ancient to modern, every nation, always growing. Knowledge stays outside the paywall.
  • Scammers get banned. When the community flags a bad actor, we act. Trust is what makes trading between real collectors work.
  • You only pay for premium features. The vault (10 items free), the reference guide, and the community are always free. Premium is $25/yr and unlocks unlimited vault items plus marketplace listings.

Founders' Five-Finger Discount

  • Users 1–25: Skip checkout entirely — free lifetime premium subscription.
  • Users 26–50: One-time $25 charge for a lifetime subscription.
  • Everyone after: $25/yr for life. If prices ever increase, only new users see the change — you're locked in.

This platform exists to be the home I couldn't find when I needed it most. It's yours as much as it is mine — the collection belongs to you, the community makes the whole thing worthwhile, and the platform's job is to get out of the way.
